The Sarcoma Foundation of America’s (SFA) 2nd Annual Race to Cure Sarcoma Atlanta, a charity walk/run to benefit the SFA.

Kayla Lunn of Suwanee started the event last year in memory of her father, Eric Butcher, who passed away from sarcoma in September 2016, at the age of 53. Eric lived in Braselton. Eric was 34 years old when he was diagnosed with sarcoma in 1996. It started out initially as a brain tumor. He spent the next 20 years in a constant battle with the disease and underwent countless surgeries, radiation treatments and chemotherapy infusions at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute and Georgia Cancer Specialists. But he never complained, says his daughter Kayla. “He was the first to ask a stranger at the grocery store how their day was,” said Kayla. “He smiled at the nurses and medical staff that took care of him during his hospitalizations and office visits, and cracked the same jokes that always put a smile on their faces (well, they always put a smile on mine).”

After Eric passed away, Kayla contacted the Sarcoma Foundation of America to see if Atlanta could have its own Race to Cure Sarcoma. The inaugural Race to Cure Sarcoma in Atlanta was in 2018. The event had 13 teams and raised more than $30,000. For this year’s event, 23 teams, more than 500 people, have already registered for the event.

Sponsors of the Race to Cure Sarcoma Atlanta include Northside Hospital Cancer Institute- Sarcoma Program, Chick-Fil-A, Cardinal SEO Company, Shadow Brook Dental Care, andLifeline Primary Care.
