Take a Walk on the Wildside!
Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary, formerly Yellow River Game Ranch, has been an iconic destination for Georgians for almost 60 years. Founded as a home for injured and orphaned wildlife and a place where hundreds of families could come to interact with deer, rabbits, goats, and more, the Game Ranch closed in 2018 and re-opened under new ownership as Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary has made major improvements to the property and has grown to provide resident animals with enrichment activities, high-quality diets, and well-maintained habitats.
With the help of talented curators, keepers, staff, and volunteers working closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary promotes animal appreciation and provides wildlife education. YRWS offers people of all ages opportunities to get very close to and learn about many of Georgia’s native and not-so-native animals right outside of Atlanta.
Check out the black bears playing in the waterfalls. Little ones will love feeding and brushing down barnyard animals like goats, sheep, and the huge but lovable steer Ferdinand. Sit with the bunnies in the bunny yard, feed American bison if you dare. Hang out with lovable lemurs and spider monkeys, and have a howling good time with the coyotes. After enjoying the animals, take a crack at gem mining any rockhound would love.

Kayak or Canoe the Broad River
Georgia’s Broad River Outpost offers kayak and canoe rentals with two floats. The first is a mild and scenic float on the “Upper” (section 1) with moving water through shallow shoals. The second option is the Wet and Wild “Lower” (section 2) with fun beginner whitewater containing four large shoals with Class II rapids and calmer waters in between. Bring small coolers only.
