A Suwanee student won a cash prize this year during the 9th annual International ARTEFFECT Competition. The finalists were selected from a pool of skilled students grades 6-12 across the world that created visual art projects to celebrate “Unsung Heroes” from history. Participants were tasked with illuminating the lives of underappreciated individuals who made a lasting impact on history.
Cailyn Yoon, a freshman from Lambert High School in Suwanee, was one of four students to receive a $1,000 Spotlight Prize from The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Her piece titled Shadows of War was inspired by Chester Nez, one of the “First Twenty-Nine” Navajo Code Talkers in World War ll. Yoon made an incredible graphite drawing, depicting the many hours Chester Nez spent translating during the war.
There were two other winners from Georgia, both recent graduates of the Savannah Arts Academy. Along with their cash prizes, the winners will also have their projects and impact statements showcased on the Lowell Milken Center website, LowellMilkenCenter.org.
