Artist Spotlight: Kayla Brown

Kayla Brown is a young artist who specializes in drawing, painting, illustration, and graphic design. Throughout her childhood, Kayla was inspired by cartoons, animation, comics, and video games and would often draw characters from them and even create her own. Over time, she began doing portraiture, still life, sculpture, and other forms of art using a variety of media. With the encouragement of her parents, she became a member of the Suwanee Arts Center at age 15 as a sophomore attending North Gwinnett High School and participated in several exhibitions and two art festivals.

Kayla is currently attending Kennesaw State University majoring in digital animation. Along with art, she is also pursuing her passion for music by being a part of the KSU Philharmonic Orchestra and playing the cello. She aspires to become an animator and storyboard artist for Cartoon Network or Pixar to fulfill her dream of creating more animated shows and movies that feature African Americans as main characters. “Growing up (and even now still), there were not a lot of cartoons or animated shows that represented characters that looked like me,” she says. “My work and my style are driven by creating what I don’t normally see in order to inspire the minds of others to follow suit.”
